Supporting Men’s Health Through Nutrition
It is vitally important that the men in our lives take care of their health. They are husbands, fathers, brothers, and uncles who need adequate fuel to do what they do everyday. Whether they work a physically strenuous job, coach after school sports, or work in an emotionally demanding job (teacher, doctor, counselor), taking care of their health should be the number #1 priority.
Heart Health is Vital
The heart is the main organ responsible for delivering blood to all the other organs, including the brain. It delivers nutrient rich blood to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs of the body. When this organ is weak it cannot do its job properly and other health problems tend to occur.
The leading cause of death for men in the United States is heart disease. Researchers concluded that men were twice as likely to have a heart attack than women. The risk factors for heart disease include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity. Eating heart-healthy foods like whole-grains, fatty fish, dark green vegetables like spinach, kale, and collard greens, fruits, berries, and nuts provide essential vitamins and minerals the heart needs to be healthy.
Increase Muscle Mass
Along with eating a healthy diet, getting enough physical exercise goes a long way towards strengthening your heart and your muscles. As we get older, maintaining muscle mass is vitally important to staying healthy. It is recommended to do some type of resistance training 2 to 3 days per week. Staying physically active helps lower blood pressure, lowers heart disease risks, and helps with weight management. Obesity develops slowly over time mostly due to inactivity. Increasing muscle mass through exercise helps keep the heart muscle healthy and functioning optimally.
If you are overweight you are at an increased risk for heart disease. When we recommend losing weight what that really means is losing fat. Your weight will fluctuate with changes in muscle composition. Fat loss is the goal of any diet program. Weight is not the real issue, the real issue is the amount of fat around your heart, liver, and spleen that puts you at risk for a heart attack.
Support for Skin and Joint Health
Collagen is an important nutrient for healthy skin. It is made by the body and supports the muscles and tissues in the face, neck, and hands. It is a very important protein and is necessary for building connective tissue to support the layers of skin that prevent wrinkles and visible signs of aging. Bone broth is a good source of collagen as well as fish, chicken, egg whites, tomatoes, and garlic.
Decreases in collagen may lead to joint pain, stiff tendons and ligaments, weakening muscles, osteoarthritis, and reduced hair growth (may contribute to hair thinning). If you are not getting enough collagen through diet supplementing with a product that is a great way to support skin and joint health for men.
Follow these suggestions to maintain a healthy heart and be there for the ones you love. You can reduce your risk of heart disease by eating a healthy diet, lower blood pressure, exercise more, quit smoking, and reduce your stress levels.
