When moving into a new neighborhood, we dream of finding neighbors that are just like us. We hope they will be clean, quiet, and invite us over for a backyard barbecue every now and then. Few of us actually get neighbors with similar habits. Law firms deal with neighborhood disputes and can help resolve most issues in a friendly, professional manner.
Most minor disagreements can be handled and resolved by a friendly approach and polite words. People don’t often know when they are irritating us with their behavior and a few polite words explaining why their actions are irritating or upsetting to us and asking them politely to stop, usually does the trick. The idea is to be the type of neighbor you want to have because you are likely to be living next to this person for quite a while.
Incidences that might occur include:
Property Line Disputes – Disputes over property lines are common and typically occur when one neighbor wants to expand or build on. It may involve deeds and having a surveyor come out to measure boundary lines. If handled respectfully it shouldn’t turn into a conflict unless there was a conflict already present between the parties involved.
Noise Disturbances – We all expect to be able to relax and have peace and quiet when we’re at home. You should check with your local town ordinance for laws concerning noise and disturbances. These are the times of the day when you are expected to keep noise to a minimum (usually 10 to 11 pm). If your neighbor makes a lot of noise when you’re trying to sleep you should try talking to them first, and if that is unsuccessful you may need to call in law enforcement for support. It is best to try talking to them first to avoid unnecessary problems.
Dead or Broken Trees – A tree that hangs over your fence or your neighbor’s fence may become an issue if not handled in the beginning. Dead trees, branches overhanging power lines, or broken branches that are near to your property can become a hazard in times of bad weather. High winds can break branches, uproot small trees, and cause a lot of damage. If you have any of these issues it is best to speak with your neighbor early on to see if the situation can be remedied. In the event that even this does not help, a law firm may be able to draft a letter on your behalf outlining legal issues that could ensue.
Abuse or Mistreatment of Animals – Animal abuse is terrible and should not be allowed to continue. If you observe someone abusing an animal you need to report it to the proper authorities. This may be handled by law enforcement or animal control in different areas. You may need to call around to find out who handles these types of complaints. Likewise, if your neighbor has a dangerous animal on the property, you may report that also. You deserve to feel safe in your own home and on your own property.
Should you need assistance resolving issues with a neighbor, call a law firm and speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
